August 1, 2017   Hello! With 2 billion users and counting, Facebook has done pretty well for itself by focusing on connecting the online world, but it isn't done yet. Apparently it isn't satisfied with just the online world anymore, either. Rumors are circulating that Mark Zuckerberg and company are ramping up their hardware efforts, and that means we could soon see Facebook making more things for the physical world. What those things look like in execution are still anyone's guess, but you can bet they'll serve the aim of further embedding Facebook into people's daily routines. A report from Bloomberg today suggests the company is working on a video-chatting device about the size of a laptop—something that could help people feel like they're in the same room. And last week, another rumor surfaced suggesting that Facebook is working on a smart speaker that would compete with Amazon's Echo. Either way, it's clear that tech companies will be increasingly vying for a space on your nightstand or kitchen counter with their always-on devices. Not to get too "back in the day" here, but I remember when Facebook and Amazon were just websites.
